Research Workbench

Terms of use

These terms cover researchworkbench.space, its forum, the cloud workbench, and the desktop workbench and browser extension you can download from it. By using them, or by creating an account, you agree to these terms.

Who we are

Research Workbench is run by Enrico Rossini, an individual, in the United Kingdom. Questions about these terms go to privacy@researchworkbench.space.

Your account

  • You must be 16 or over to create an account.
  • Give accurate details, keep your password and passkeys to yourself, and tell us if you think someone else has used your account.
  • One account per person. The cloud workbench is by invitation, and an invitation is personal.
  • You can delete your account at any time from your account's personal data page.

What you put in

What you write, upload or keep remains yours. You give us only the permission needed to store it, show it where you choose (in the forum, to everyone) and back it up. You are responsible for having the right to put it there, including other people's work and personal data.

In the forum and anywhere else on the site, do not:

  • post anything unlawful, defamatory, harassing or hateful, or anything that infringes someone else's rights;
  • post other people's personal data without their agreement;
  • advertise, spam, or impersonate anyone;
  • try to get into accounts or data that are not yours, or to disrupt or overload the service.

We may remove content that breaks these terms, and suspend or close an account that does so seriously or repeatedly, telling you why unless the law prevents it.

AI providers: your keys, or the workbench's

The workbench uses AI providers with keys you supply, or, with a subscription to the cloud workbench, with the workbench's own. With your own keys, your use of each provider is under your own agreement with them, and any charges are yours. What an AI model produces can be wrong: the workbench records every call so you can check it, and checking it before you rely on it — in a paper, a thesis or anything else — is your responsibility.

A call made with the workbench's keys is charged at the published price for its model - the provider's own price plus 40% - from what it read and wrote; the prices and the models offered are on the Settings page. A call that fails is not charged. Nothing is paid in advance: the calls are added up over each calendar month, in UK time, and charged on the first day of the next month to the card on your subscription, as one item on your invoice. Less than £1 is carried to the next month, and whatever is left is charged when your subscription ends.

You set a monthly limit for these calls in Settings: £20 unless you change it, and up to £100. A call that would take you past it is not made. If a monthly charge cannot be taken, calls with the workbench's keys stop until it is paid; your own keys, and models on your own computer, keep working. Prices may change for calls not yet made; a change applies from the day it is published.

Paying for the cloud workbench

During the beta, nothing is paid for. The cloud workbench is free for those invited to it, with AI used through your own keys or a model on your computer, and nothing can be bought. When the beta ends we will tell you at least 30 days before; what follows then applies only if you choose to subscribe, and nothing you keep in the workbench is deleted if you do not.

After the beta, the cloud workbench is paid for by subscription, £8 a month or £80 a year, in advance. It renews at the end of each period until you cancel it, which you can do at any time under Manage what you pay in Settings; it then runs to the end of the period paid for. A subscription keeps 500 MB of your original files, and more storage can be bought on top.

Our order process is conducted by our online reseller Paddle.com. Paddle.com is the Merchant of Record for all our orders. Paddle provides all customer service inquiries and handles returns.

If a subscription ends, your devices stop syncing and new files are not kept; your workspace can still be read, nothing is deleted, and AI used and not yet billed is charged. Renewing it carries on from where it stopped.

By law you can cancel a purchase within 14 days. Because the workbench is supplied at once, when you subscribe you ask for it to start straight away: if you cancel within 14 days, the rest of the period is refunded. AI use is charged only after it has been supplied.

Prices are in pounds. Paddle shows them in your own currency where it can, and works out any tax due where you are before you pay. We will tell you at least 30 days before a subscription's price changes.

The software, as it is

Research Workbench is in preview. Apart from the subscription and credit you pay for, it is provided free and as it is; all of it is provided without any promise that it will be available, free of faults, or suited to a particular purpose, beyond what the law requires for what you pay for. Keep your own copies of anything you cannot afford to lose; the desktop workbench keeps your vault as ordinary files on your computer for that reason. Features may change or be withdrawn.

So far as the law allows, we are not liable for any loss of data, work, income or opportunity arising from using the site or the software. Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law, such as for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud.

Privacy, changes and law

How personal data is handled is set out in the privacy policy. If these terms change, this page changes first, with its date, and a change that matters to you is emailed to account holders before it takes effect.

These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and its courts have jurisdiction. If you live elsewhere in the UK, you may also bring proceedings in your own country's courts.
